Genre Decision Blog

Following extensive study on genres, thriller, horror, and comedy. As a group, we decided the genre that will be used for our opening scene will be the thriller genre. We think this is the best option as it fits our pitch the best. The first choice that we eliminated was the comedy genre. We thought it would be very difficult to make our serious pitch into something funny and the opening sequence is quite short, so it would not be great to make it too busy. So, we concluded that it wasn’t possible to turn this concept into a comedy in just two minutes. Next, we had to choose between horror and thriller. This was very difficult as these two genres would both fit our pitch perfectly. The concept of missing bodies in an abandoned building was more on the horror side. While the concept of trying to solve these murders and drawing themselves into it was more on the thriller side. Since our pitch leaned towards the thriller side a little more, we decided on that. Also, both genres are often arranged in a similar fashion. Where both eventually manage to elude the menace or potential evil. However, the conclusion of a thriller is a tension-filled plot that is not foreseeable. Whereas horror is the seemingly inevitable yet predictable disaster, where the climax is either escaping away or preventing the evil. As a group we decided to make our opening sequence unpredictable by potentially adding a plot twist. For example, revealing the unexpected villain during the climax. Also, many horror movies are labeled as supernatural because this produces scares, which would not really tie into our pitch. It would be better/easier to choose the thriller genre as you can add horror elements easily rather than vice versa. These are the reasons why as a group we chose thriller as our genre.
