Genre Research: Horror

 Horror is a genre of fiction intended to frighten, scare, or disgust viewers. 

Common camera angles in your genre (CAMS) 

  • -The camera angles commonly used in a horror film include hand held shots, low angle, high angle, tilted angle, close up, tracking shot, pan, reverse shot, and God’s eye/aerial shot. 

Common Mis-en-Scene in your genre (CLAMPS) 

  • -In a horror film, costume is important to determine if a character is good or bad. There are also certain “tropes” such as the girl in the white dress with blood splattered and black hair, or the villain in all black with a mask. 

  • -The lighting is often dark and atmospheric. This gives the film grounds for a good jump scare or hidden character. They also use night vision-like lighting when entering a dark atmosphere. 

  • -The acting can be intense at times. The characters are typically calm but at the climaxes of the movie, they must prepare to scream, fight, run, etc. The villain will often have a calm but creepy demeanor. 

  • -The makeup in these films is usually quite extravagant. The villain of the movie usually will have intense special effects makeup. Characters in these films will also often be dirty or sweaty, an effect created by makeup. 

  • -Props are quite an important part of horror films. They can use weapons similar to a thriller, such as knives and guns, or they can use creepy artifacts. Sometimes horror films will use crosses and bibles to show religious faith or possession. 

  • -Similar to a thriller film, these films are often shot in a mysterious and dark area like a graveyard or abandoned building. They will also film somewhere like a cabin in the middle of the woods, mountains, or any other deserted area. 

Common Editing in your genre 

  • -Typically, with all of the action occurring in the film, the transitions are cuts like a cutaway or jump cut. They also often use a split screen to show two events happening or two points of view for a certain event. 

Common sound in your genre 

  • -Non-diegetic sound is used frequently, such as short pieces of sinister music to increase suspense and let viewers know something is about to happen. They also use a lot of dialogue, specifically from the villains.
