Title Design Research Thriller: Outbreak

  1. How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film? Which ones? 

30 titles were displayed in total during the opening sequence to the film. This included the names of the cast, costume designers, music producers, co-producers, editors, production designer, photography director, executive producer, executive producer, writers, producers, and the director. 

  1. What images are prioritized in the opening sequence? 

The images prioritized in the opening sequence are an enormous explosion in a forest. Then it jumps to the present to the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases in Detrick, Maryland. It goes through each level in the institute showing people in hazmat suits or lab coats working in a laboratory. 

  1. What connotations do these images carry? 

The images carry a serious and mysterious connotation. In the beginning there was a huge explosion in a forest and then it brings you back to the present, making you wonder what could have led up to that event.  

  1. How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset? 

It builds up tension very early on in the opening sequence. It showed elements of a thriller movie with the explosion, making viewers think why and how that happened. 

  1. What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience? 

People who enjoy thriller films will be drawn to the music in the background, which builds up the tension. Also, the action-packed start of the opening sequence leading into the backstory really pulls people in.  

 

  1. How has technology been used effectively? You want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques. 

They used an aerial shot for the explosion showing how everything just went up into flames. They used a point of view shot for the remainder of the opening sequence as they went through each floor in the institute to show what they do. The editing they used was putting words on the screen to show them where they were and what they did there.
