Production Blog: Editing!

Hello again! After such a long weekend of filming, the group has now taken on the task of editing. As I have mentioned in previous blogs, Jordyn is the main lead in editing in the group, as she has the most experience and is the most tech-savvy, so she again took the lead here. The main application used was iMovie. This was used to combine the raw takes together, ensuring that the scenes line up, and the transitions are correct, as well as adding a few subtle transitions and hues. This application made it exceptionally easier for the group to see how to line up the shots during filming. After I shot a scene, Jordyn would mash them up together on her phone and make sure the transitions between scenes were as seamless as possible. If these clips were not to the group's liking, the application also allowed for the individual scenes to be cropped, zoomed, pinched out, and moved up or down.

After this rough-draft stage of editing, Jordyn uploaded the clips onto a software called DaVinci Resolve 18. I am not familiar with this software, so I was not much help to Jordyn at this stage, but I was always available to call to answer her questions or give her editing tips. One of the first things Jordyn consulted with the group was the color scheme of the film. This is something that had been discussed with the group before when deciding that they would prefer a more warm-toned than a cool-toned scheme in order to produce a more "vintage" look, so the group concluded with the same consensus. Next, Jordyn got to work incorporating the scores that Ashley had made to match each scene, also including other sound effects, and the final song, "metamorphosis" that, you may remember, we were granted permission to utilize. She worked very hard to ensure that the scores were audible, but not too loud, and yet still reduced unwanted ambient sound. She also tinkered with the volumes of our sound effects, including the news station jingle, and primarily the sound effect of police knocking on the door. For this, Ashley's father sent a voice memo of him reciting "Plantation police, open up!" which was edited onto the film in post. In order for him to be heard clearly, Jordyn had to increase the volume of this clip greatly and lower the surrounding sound. Finally, Jordyn concluded the editing by inserting a fade-to-black after the final scene, which had long been discussed by the group. This provides a bit more time for the viewers to hear the "metamorphosis" piece and have it be the main focus. After this, editing was concluded until filming resumed, and the group could not be happier with the product so far! Thanks for reading, and see you again very soon!
