Movie Conventions Research: Mission: Impossible- Fallout
Common CAMS in the movie
One of the most used shots in this movie was an aerial shot. This shot showed the location where they are in the movie and when action scenes were taking place. This shot gave a deeper understanding of the action happening at that time. There were many other shots used throughout this film, however this one stood out the most. Some other shots included low angels, high angels, and two shots.
Common CLAMPS in the movie
The costumes in this movie mainly gave a feeling of “mysterious but dangerous”. As shown commonly in the film industry, the clothing in this movie was very gender based. For the men, they were often wearing monochromatic, all-black outfits, frequently with a piece like a leatherjacket or bold dress boots. For women, the main female characters were wearing red and mostly dresses as well.
The lighting in this movie varied. Most of the scenes were brightly lit as they would be normally, but some scenes such as the tunnel scene were accompanied by dimmer lighting, and even red lighting for a bit.
This movie used many well-known actors such as Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, and Jeremy Renner. With bigger names, often comes better acting. The main characters were very good at showing suspense and were very good at physical acting. They often had to fight using weapons and had to show in their acting how tired and hurt that they were.
Like most movies, this one used makeup for special effects when a character was injured. They also used general makeup for the female characters, but only basic, nothing too extravagant. They also used masks to change a characters’ face.
Examples of props in this movie mostly include weapons such as guns, but also automatic vehicles like cars, motorcycles, and helicopters. These are common for thriller movies because they show a lot of action.
The setting of this movie changed frequently. Some places they shot in included a cliff, France, specifically near the Eiffel tower, and also in various building and streets or tunnels. The continuous change of location is very common for thriller movies with a lot of action.
Common Sound in the movie
For this particular movie there was a widely popular film score that was composed and recorded especially for this film. That is the “theme from Mission: Impossible”. This song came out almost every time an action scene happened for the main character.
Common Editing in the movie
Like most action thriller movies, this movie uses various jump cuts and cutaways to show action happening in different places or different times. They also often use action match, reverse shot, and eyeline match to show what characters are seeing and also to see a different point of view of an action.
Elements of the Genre in the movie
It's an espionage thriller where there is plenty of action and a complicated plot. There is also a plot twist when August Walker actually turns out to be a villain.
What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like?
I liked the use of an aerial shot. Although the movie would have to be highly budgeted to do one of these shots, I think it really stood out and made the action scenes better, giving you a better understanding. I also liked the use of props including guns and all the different types of vehicles, which really highlighted the thriller to this movie.
What elements of the genre did the movie have that do not appeal to you?
When watching the movie there really wasn’t anything that didn’t appeal to me because of how well the film turned out to be. However, the spy thriller elements of Mission: Impossible – Fallout are weaker than the other movies. Also, in my opinion I do not think the plot twist was that great.
